Shot Designer
Testimonials
"I use Shot Designer all the time. It's a fantastic tool for planning coverage, and an even better one as a fast means of communication to share the plan with DoP and operators.
I've used a fully-animated sequence to break down the beats of a complex crane shot which had to work first time [it did], and I've often stood my iPad on set for everyone to see how a complex block involving multiple characters could be covered in the most efficient way. If I had to pinpoint a single stand-out quality of Shot Designer, it's the means it gives me to map a number of desired set-ups, then plan multiple camera coverage with both the DoP and the sound recordist - so that the DoP gets each camera framing something well lit, and the sound dept isn't putting its booms in all the wrong places. This makes it a complete life-saver on complex 'dinner-table' scenes (plenty of those in Downton Abbey!)"
David Evans - Director "Downton Abbey" (2012-2015) "The Perfect Catch" (2005) "My Nazi Legacy" (2015)
" I finished directing a great project yesterday and I started my day with our DP and operator huddled around my computer, watching my animated shot designs for every shot for the whole day's work, and I literally thought I've got to let these guys know what a difference their program made to my shoot"
Gregor Wilson - Production Manager/Producer "Batman v Superman" (2016) "Man of Steel" (2013) "Justice League" (2017) "Prisoners" (2013)
"Crisis is the time of opportunities. For me, lockdown made it possible to gain new skills, amongst which I would put film direction in first place. I was lucky to jump on a high speed train of Michael Vynberg's pilot master class for directors.
I started using Shot Designer for visualization of scenes blocking to accomplish my home tasks during this course (basically all the activities during lockdown can be classified as home tasks but these are significantly pleasant). I find it very useful and user friendly - it simplifies the process and allows to share my ideas in a moment's notice. I'm extremely grateful to developers and producers of Shot Designer who made it possible to reach my goals so efficiently and quickly. "
Daria Kaplya, Head of Production at Sony Pictures Television - Russia
"Shot Designer has proven to be fantastic tool for illustrating camera and light positions in relation to our on set visual effects work.
With an intuitive, easy to learn interface, quick editing, and image integration, Shot Designer has become one of the must-have tools in our episodic data collection workflow. We're not on set without it."
Marc Lougee - VFX Supervisor "The Flash" (2014)
"I was 2 weeks from directing my 3rd short film. One of my biggest concerns was getting the coverage for a scene around a dinner table with 3 actors. Not only did I want to make sure I had enough coverage but I was concerned about keeping all the eye lines correct. When I laid out the scene on Shot Designer, it was super easy. When it was time to shoot, I simply followed the shots on my layout and checked them off as went. Very efficient way of film making."
Eric Dyson - Director/Cinematographer/Camera and Electrical "Baby Steps" (2018) "Playing for Keeps" (2012) "A Wrinkle in Time" (2018) "Batman Forever" (1995)
"Shot Designer is my trusty friend on any set. Staging is a breeze since Cast and Crew can see it and get the idea of the sequence in a snap. My Directing students at Dodge love the quick learning curve and are using it on all their films."
John Badham,Professor Dodge College of Film & Media/Director/Producer "Saturday Night Fever" (1977) "WarGames" (1983) "Short Circuit" (1986)
"As a DP, Shot Designer is my favorite way to quickly envision how to light and shoot a scene. It's a visual way to plan the gear and budget I need, and then communicate accordingly with camera and lighting departments. I even print off my SD diagrams so the Gaffer can light without many follow-up questions, saving us both valuable time on set."
Nathan Thompson - Director of Photography - Clients include: ESPN, Google, Amazon, Spotify, Taylor Swift, Nicole Kidman

"I am actively using Shot Designer on my episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that I'm directing. This application is a truly excellent way to quickly design your shots and most importantly organize your day's work.
Having a game plan when stepping onto your set is the first step to success. Whether you stick to your plan or adjust it on the day doesn't matter. What matters is going in with a neat and organized idea for your day's work and then being able to share your ideas with your DP, Script Supervisor and 1st AD. Shot Designer has been so incredibly helpful and easy to use."
Mark Kolpack - Visual Effects/Director "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" (2013-2020) "The Box" (2009) "Godzilla" (1998) "Blade" (1998)
"The interface of Shot Designer is flawless, its visual language makes it universally accessible to filmmakers from distant nations and cultures. It solves a lot of communication issues, making it easy to discuss and develop concepts between the Creative and the Production sides of a film.
Because the end result is extremely easy to read, it is very useful when you need to explain a film shoot to non-filmmakers types as government officials, police, location owners etc."
Inti Carboni - Assistant Director/Producer/Director "S is for Stanley" (2015) "Gangs of New York" (2002) "Spectre" (2015)

David Ungaro - Cinematographer/Camera and Electical/Director/Writer "Samaritan" - MGM (2021) "Les Miserables" (1998) "A Prayer Before Dawn" (2017)
"An overlooked use for Shot Designer is that you can put together the most awesome car stunt sequences with this app. I screen grabbed the exact location from Google Maps and used it as the background. Not only were my director and producers completely impressed at the production meeting, but I emailed a video of the sequence to each of my stunt drivers and when they arrived on set that all knew exactly what they were doing.
As a result rehearsals went faster, were safer and not only did the sequence look amazing but it saved the production a ton of time and money. I ended up looking like a hero!"
Ed Anders - Stunt Coordinator "Godzilla" (2014), "I, Robot" (2004), "RoboCop" (2014) "2012" (2009) "Deadpool 2" (2018)
"My shot lists used to consist only of wordy descriptions. Sometimes that's enough to convey what you and the director have in mind, but often words alone can't convey the precise movement and subtle nuances of a particular shot. Now with Shot Designer I can easily draw out camera movement, actor blocking and equipment needed, allowing the whole crew to get a clear idea of the shot we are going for."
Jeff Cutter - Cinematographer/Camera and Electrical "10 Cloverfield Lane" (2016) "Non-Step" (2014)
"Excellent tool for planning my scenes fast!"
Clint Reagan, Previz Supervisor, Hunger Games, Prometheus, Knight & Day, GI Joe
"I was in the middle of prepping for a rather large Saturday Night Live sketch, involving 3 cameras, special fx, intricate blocking and camera moves. Pen and paper simply wasn't gonna cut it. I'd heard of shot designer before but i had never actually used it. I tried it and instantly knew it was the tool I needed to properly convey my plans for the shoot. It was straight forward to use and I can honestly say the shoot was a success because of the planning I was able to do using Shot Designer."
Lance Kuhns - Director of Photography "Saturday Night Live" "Long Gone By" (2019) "The Heart of Man" (2017)
"Shot Designer has become an essential addition to my toolbox in pre-production on projects of any scale. It enables me to be more efficient in prep and so I can focus on being more creative on the day."
James Friend - Cinematographer/Producer "Your Honor" (2020), The War of the Worlds (2019)

The flexibility on multiple platforms and easy use of adding, moving, and creating objects along with adding camera shots taken on scouts or storyboard images has been a life saver. "Shot Designer is an Incredibly helpful tool for live television staging. Prior to rehearsals for live musicals and comedy sketches, the show director designs the scene and we review the camera moves on Shot Designer including handheld camera and Steadicam paths.
As technical producer, this visualization allows me to pre-set staging elements such as risers, props, and pyro effects without consuming any costly production time."
Raul Gutierrez - Contractor NBC Universal

"I'm very happy to have found Shot Designer. It's simple and to the point. In the commercial and promo world we don't have the luxury of a CAD lighting design and weeks of pre light. We scout one day and shoot the next. We need to get orders placed quickly for gear. Shot designer gets the point across to everyone before the rental house closes."
Jordan McMonagle - Camera and Electrical/Cinematographer "Crossroads" (2002) "Café Society" (1995) "Good Intentions" (2010)
"Using Shot Designer not only helps me share my ideas with designers and department heads, it also pushes me to visualize creative shot ideas for myself. As a graduate film student, I often have multiple projects at various stages of development. Shot Designer helps me stay organized while conceptualizing shots at all stages of the pre-production process.
Playing around with Shot Designer cements the visual concepts I am learning in graduate school while letting me explore my own visual aesthetic, all before I even arrive on set. And the animations make blocking and camera movement so much easier than trying to draw it all out on separate diagrams. I can't speak highly enough about Shot Designer!"

This time however with the pandemic changing the way productions prep, I am utilizing the lighting tool as a way to share my lighting ideas with my gaffer and key grip without being in the same room with them. Without Shot Designer I would have spent hours on the phone explaining exact lighting locations."

Rick Law - Producer/Writer/Concept Artist "Leonard Knight: A Man and His Mountain" (2015)
"I use Shot Designer on every project. For me, it serves two functions: One, it allows me to imagine the entire shoot during prep. This goes very far in building my confidence during production. There's nothing like showing up at pre-call with my designs and imagining the first few set-up of the day. Two, it allows department heads to know what the desired execution is supposed to be. Yes, problems will inevitably arise, and things will have to change, but having the designs as a foundation is key to successful problem solving in the moment."
Joaquin F. Palma - Writer/Director/Actor "Crave: The Fast Life" (2016)
"I was introduced to Shot Designer by my DP on our feature film "Tehranto" last year - when I started work as a director on "Odd Squad", I needed a tool to help me plan out and keep track of complex blocking involving multiple characters. Establishing character and camera geography on a floor plan with Shot Designer, also helped to inform my storyboards. Being able to work from my computer at home, then loading up the floorplans on my tablet to show the AD and DP an overhead walkthrough also helped to save a lot of time on set. I don't ever see myself directing another film or tv show without the use of Shot Designer. "

"In the preproduction state it´s really a handy tool to discuss the moves on set and visualise the ideas for the first time. We use this even before storyboarding, because to think through the shots with Hollywood Camera Work is far more easy then hiring a storyboard artist. When its time to storyboard, the storyboard artist finds a great help in orientating and visualising what we have planed.
In production every team member gets to know very fast what the shoot is all about and where to place stuff. A fresher look and more elements or the possibility to enrich the library with own elements would be great for the future."
Felix Gorbach - Producer/Actor/Director "Grenzganger" (2017)
"Shot Designer has been an essential part of my lighting and blocking prep. I send hard copies to my camera and lighting team so they know what to expect on every production day. Shot Designer is the easiest way to create great lighting plans!"

Matthew Knight - Cinematographer "Daffodils" (2019) "Mistress Mercy" (2018)

"Shot Designer has tremendously helped me block out my first decent-length short film by allowing me to thoroughly think through shots, visualize characters' performances, consider how each shot plays into the whole production, consider visual continuity (e.g. the 180º rule), and, overall, it has helped make the production seem that much more real to someone who has hitherto just "winged it". In essence, for people like me who cannot draw, this app has been an intuitive and effective force in the beginning of my filmmaking career; honestly, $20 is a steal!"

Going through the script scene by scene looking at the ground plans I've created has helped us talk about our intentions with greater clarity than with words and storyboards alone. I highly recommend it."

It's simple to use and I really like the interconnection of the software between PC, Mac, iPad and Smartphone."
Bastien Dreyer - Filmmaker and Cinematographer "Ave Maria" (2019)
"I would like to appreciate Shot Designer for making all shooting requirements accessible for a camera block plan. Different types of lights, props, camera and characters in different colours, description facility and story board series, etc. As a suggestion I would say a drawing facility and editing the size of characters could be additional services, however the current Shot Designer meets all the aspects of lighting plan and camera block for professionals."
Musa Zakizada - Camera and Electrical "Damage" (2020)
"I have seen Shot Designer used from anything like directions on a call sheet, to complex shot plans which wouldn't be easy to explain without a visualization tool like we're dealing with here.
I think this is one of the most essential visualization tools in pre-production. Now instead of drawing things on paper, we can do it on our devices way quicker with additional bonus of sharing projects."
Timur Gavrilenko - Assistant Camera and Digital Imaging Technician "Strive" (2019)
"I'm a television director and I have used the Hollywood Camera Work for 3 years now. It's a friendly user application that I can use my iPad on the set.
Also, when I had some questions about a specific function, I quickly receive an answer directly from Per. I warmly recommend this application."

"Shot Designer is one of the most useful tools when prepping for a shoot. It allows me to create a map of the location and carefully plan every shot in detail including characters, camera position and movement, lighting diagrams, props, storyboards etc.. I can then sync all this information to all my devices and carry it on me wherever I go. Printing out shot lists and lighting diagrams allows me to easily get everybody on the same page on the day of shoot, avoiding time consuming misunderstandings on set. A must have app for every director or DP."
Fabio Gasser - Cinematographer/Camera and Electrical "Nora" (2018)
"I recently wrote, directed & edited a short film for a contest and one of the requirements was to submit a lighting floor plan. Not having ANY EXPERIENCE in such a thing I found Shot Designer by Hollywood Camera Work and figured it out in a short while.
After creating the lighting layout, including scene annotations for the first scene fairly effortlessly and seeing what options you have available, I created a nice 10 page PDF explaining how I made all my scenes. I wouldn't even think of doing this any other way and now I want to make something else straight away! THANK YOU FOR THIS TOOL, I LOVE IT!"
Carmine D'Amore - Writer/Cinematographer/Director/Editor/Producer "Hola & Welcome" (2019)

Noah Davenport - Director/Actor/Writer "Greek Gossip" (2020) "This is Where Your Shit Goes" (2019)
"Before using Shot Designer, I used to do it on paper with a pen. If there were mistakes, I often had to draw it all over again - what a waste of time! And my drawings would become so complicated, with layers and layers of camera movements, actors positions..I was the only one able to read it! My dear crew, this time is over."
Joss Refauvelet - Director/Cinematographer/Producer "Park Reverse Neutral Drive" (2017) "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" (2021)

"I am a film editor with over two decades of experience in this industry and I often find myself in situations where mistakes made during blocking and staging are hard to fix in the cutting room. Having Shot Designer on a phone let me quickly show the correct blocking to the director and although it doesn't help with the film we are working on it hopefully gives them the good tool to avoid mistakes on their further projects."
Misha Aranyshev - Producer/Editor "Snow Maiden" "Dolphin Jump" (2009)
"Shot Designer was an integral part of my pre-production process on Queen of Spades. Working with the director and production designer we established the studio set, and used Shot Designer to map out how we wanted the blocking and camera flow of the scenes to happen for the entire film.
The shot list that was generated from Shot Designer became our roadmap while in the trenches of production. Shooting 100 pages of script in 16 days is no small task, fortunately having the app enabled me to be on track while shooting, and make all of our days. The best part was that when it came time for the VFX green screen shoots, we were able to input shots right into the APP and have them as a guide to ensure our angles and framing matched to the reference plates.
This was my first feature film using Shot Designer, and it's now a keystone in my pre-production process."

This made it easy for me to visually communicate my lighting approach to other key creatives involved. The director and I would also use it to block and design our coverage for many of the scenes. Will continue to use Shot Designer on future projects!"

"Shot Designer Pro is extremely helpful for developing a plan of attack for any production. I recently used it to diagram several scenes for a film. When I sent the diagram to the director, 1st AD, and my gaffer I felt like a rockstar. It gave the director something tangible to plan with, it gave the 1st AD an idea of how to form the schedule, and the gaffer knew what the lighting plan was as soon as we landed on set. They were extremely thankful and it made me look like a pro!"

"I am based out here in Nigeria and I just shot my first film: a short I am really excited about it. At first I had my fears when the workload started getting overwhelming. I never thought it was going to be easy, but if I am honest, I didn't think it will require as much planning.
In the course of my research I had stumbled upon a recommendation for Shot Designer and I decided to give it a try. I must say it took away a great amount of guesswork from my process and I was able to demonstrate my exact vision for my actors and crew when we got on set and had to do the blocking rehearsals. And, should I add, it made me come off as really professional. As shotlists often go, there were scenes when we had to throw it all off the window, but even in those moments, I was still able to have a good grasp of situations because, with the help of Shot Designer, I had visualized my scenes and shots to inch perfection."

Myself just starting out as a young DP, it's been really useful to have a tool to lean on, while working on everything from recce to blocking.
For me it makes workflow with the director, scenographer or my gaffer so much more efficient and focused more on the vision itself, rather then trying to explain the technical details."
Jakub Zagajewski - Photographer and Filmmaker

I used to walk around with a big binder and design my shots on paper director's diagrams. Every time I wanted to make a change, I'd have to erase or start completely over.
With Shot Designer I can easily import my director diagrams and try different things without worrying about messy erase marks or confusing lines from changes. It has totally freed up my creative right-brain thinking as I stage my actors and place my cameras. I couldn't be happier with Shot Designer! "

"I used Shot Designer recently to map out coverage during a recent shoot. I found it very easy to look at the story boards provided by the director and then map out camera positions based on each shot, making sure that no coverage was missed in the short amount of time we had to shoot the scene. The director and I then sat down together and used shot designer to plan the blocking based on both the story boards, camera positions, and any necessary changes in lighting setups.
On shoot day, I gave my gaffer the and AD the diagrams. Working off of theses diagrams, we were able to save an enormous amount of time, thereby giving us time for additional shots. I found the program easy to use and the learning curve was not steep. It was very intuitive."

Salvador Carrasco - Director "The Other Conquest" (1998) "Hurt" (2015)
"I am a television director and show runner. Before Shot Designer, I used to design my blocking with a ruler and stencils. Once I found the app, and learned all that it has tot offer, I have never looked back.
I have used it on every show I have shot for the past 7 years. I liken Shot Designer to learning a new language. Once you master it, you are able to conceive and dream of camera blocking in a way that is not possible with paper and pencil or, frankly, standing on the location. There is something so focused about manipulating the simple relationships between actors, location and camera that allows me to quickly design coverage that is dramatic, unique and efficient.
It works for small scenes and big ones. I spent two days designing and animating a large club scene with 75 extras, grouping coverage from 3 different cameras to efficiently make use of our limited time. Shot Desginer has literally changed the way I approach directing."

You are truly on to something. Everything I've watched is incredible. Obvious, really. But only obvious because you explained it so.

"We were in the process of constructing a soundstage inside an old industrial steel warehouse in Abu Dhabi. Challenges were great in terms of Acoustics, Lighting grid and set build for the production of a TV soap Opera for -first time in the region. Distributing the lighting fixtures and finding exact support points for the steel grid (erected from ground up as the structure doesn't allow for suspending any extra weights from the ceiling nor the tight set allows for trusses), was a real challenge for us.
Shot Designer has provided us the right tools to finalize the lighting and grid designs through sharing scenes with DP (in Lebanon), Director (in Croatia), Set Designer (in Tunisia) and myself with the Steel Structure Engineers on site.
The DP and Directors have found great potential in Shot Designer and they are practicing on mastering it for the preparation of 3 cameras setup and Actors movement in advance before the shooting starts next month.
Shot Designer is a great software and it is evolving faster to meet the fast paced TV series production."

"I have, mostly, worked in writing software which forces you to think and, well, write, in a hierarchical way. While all that is perfectly fine when you are working on a research project, creative writing has its own demands.
Sure, you could work with, simply, a pen and paper and masters have penned down immortal works of literature using these simple tools. However, the visual thinkers need to work in ways which aid in their creative style of thinking and writing. The concept of a storyboard in creative writing is an age old one and people have taught the use of white boards for creative writers for decades.
Coming across Causality was like a dream come true for me. Causality is built very similar to the way I think, creatively. It has all necessary tools to aid in extensive story boarding and it does it in a way which is not quite possible for any other creative writing software out there today that I am aware of. It is aptly dubbed the "Story Sequencer" by its creator as it aids in sequencing your story and tracks everything, including the most intricate character development threads and arcs throughout the plot.
I can't imagine planning and outlining any story now without Causality. Whereas I still prefer the non-propriety format for my main writing (plain text formatted with Fountain), Causality has now become my only goto software for all plotting, structuring and developmental needs. Kudos to the developer for a job well done!"

"Nothing and nobody will ever convince me that a sketch can replace 'Shot Designer' when it comes to explaining to a dozen people simultaneously, exactly where they are supposed to be at any instant in time during the shooting of any given scene with three or more cameras.
When considering the above in cash terms ... how much is it worth now? 'Shot Designer' is capable of creating a team in a single day. All the planning is done as and when, in your own time, and at your own pace.
Not all of us can think on our feet flawlessly, but most directors can plan down to the finest of details, given time, and that's precisely what 'Shot Designer' does. It gives you time to plan, to allow you to even do it on a chosen location ... there is much to be said for this. I've even discovered what was thought to be an ideal spot wasn't ... which probably saved the film and an invested fortune. The camera moves would have proven impossible and the talent would have been at risk. It happens.
'Shot Designer', is a director with a perfect memory in your pocket."

"What makes Shot Designer so great is that it gives you a fully integrated solution to organize your shots. The lighting aspect only needs a couple of upgrades, but it is the best solution for DPs who don't know how to use an illustration program to create detailed lighting diagrams.
As a result I think Shot Designer will become very popular with DP's. Shot Designer is fast and easy to work with and allows you to make changes on the fly. The animations are very helpful. Shot Designer is a 'must have' tool for any size production, no matter how big or small!"
Steve Lantz - Cinematographer/Composer/Editor "The Phoenix Lights" (2005)
